Foreword Review PICTURE BOOKS Paul Thurlby's Alphabet Paul Thurlby Paul Thurlby, Illustrator Candlewick Press (October 2011) Hardcover $16.99 (64pp) 978-0-7636-5565-5 Little ones learning their letters will find this British designer’s take on the illustrated alphabet, in which he assigns each letter a word to display, especially nifty. There’s “K” for karate: a boy wearing a gi strikes a pose to approximate the shape of the letter. Ditto in “T” for trapeze, where a man hangs from a chin-up bar. These modern, collage-type illustrations are much more appealing than classic alphabet fare and will educate both kids and design-savvy parents. Ages four to eight. The Twain Met: paul Bowles's Western and Arab Critics (2010)

The Twain Met: Paul Bowles's Western and Arab Critics Ralph M. Coury Despite the fact that the critique of Orientalism has had a major impact within Middle Eastern and Islamic studies and within other areas of Western and American intellectual life, I would argue that traditional Orientalist representations of the Arab and Islamic maintain a striking virulence. Many of these representations remain deeply marked by imperialist and racist legacies, and many scholars are currently recouping and rehabili- tating them even when they seem to be challenging such legacies. I would like to illustrate these observations through a consideration of the work of the American author Paul Bowles, and of the treatment his work has received by American and Arab critics. Bowles is America's most prominent expatriate author, and is also the only American whose fiction and nonfiction have dealt largely with Morocco and North Africa. It is natural to assume

Paul's Assessment of Christian Freedom (2011)

4 Pages | 246.77 KB |

Paul’s Assessment of Christian Freedom In an awkward but memorable phrase, the Apostle Paul declares: “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” The story of Jesus Christ, as it comes to life in his followers, is a story of freedom, to be sure, but a freedom constrained by the Cross and deeply at odds with individualistic notions of liberty. Prayer Scripture Reading: Galatians 5:1, 13-15 Reflection Though we immediately resonate with Paul’s reminder to the Galatian Christians that they “were called to freedom” (5:13a), it is easy for us to misunderstand the Christian liberty that he commends to them. Today many people often think of freedom “as the maximum ability to choose whatever life I want to live with a minimum of external attachments,” Will Willimon observes. “A person who is externally determined, who lacks freedom of choice, who has succumbed to any limitations upon self-expression is
